One of the first things to catch your eye as you arrive upstairs is
the beautiful armoire, said to have been brought to Sulphur in a
wagon. It is assembled with wooden pegs, instead of nails or screws.
|
This is one of the beautiful, original
light fixtures hanging over the judge's bench in the court room.
This room also has political memorabilia, including "Thank You"
notes sent by Jackie and Ethel Kennedy, after the untimely deaths of their
husbands.

Also in the court room is an extensive
collection of Sulphur school-related items, including annuals and band,
sports and cheer uniforms. Of unique interest are the large
"permanent record" books from Hickory and Dougherty schools, in
which are inscribed the grades, attendance, and number of books read, for dozens of
students during the 1940s-50s. The bookshelf in the photo to the right,
was made in the workshop of the Oklahoma School for the Deaf at
Sulphur. |

The large leather-bound books on the shelf
to the right (above photo) contain the original records of the allotments
to Chickasaw and Choctaw tribal enrollees. Also here are homestead
patents issued to other settlers. Some original Murray County
marriage license records can be found here, too.

Seen here is the accordion-file containing many photos of Sulphur
grade-school and high-school classes, including those from Cameron and
Washington grade-schools, both of which no longer exist as schools, except
in the memories of generations of Sulphur students.
|

Several photos of military units (above)
can be found in the courtroom, as well as school desks and paraphernalia
not seen in today's classrooms. |
