Collection -Front Hall

As you enter the front hall, you will see a display of medallions and tokens.  They include  a 1924 Sulphur dog-license tag, a metal token from Doc's Rec. Club for 5¢, a wooden "Free Beer" token from Fat Jack's Bar, and tokens from Sooner's Grocery given as change for Food Stamps. (The museum is still looking for more Sulphur-related tokens and would appreciate any information our visitors can give us.  We would love to exhibit any you might have, whether on permanent or temporary loan. )

One of the most interesting, and disturbing, medallions on display is a handmade metal tag of a Ku Klux Klan Grand Dragon from Sevierville TN, dated 1875.  It is thought to have been dropped in Platt National Park in June 1924 during a Klan Day and Rally.  It is a reflection of a dark era in our Nation's and State's histories.  In the 1920's, Klan-backed political candidates attempted to take over OK government.

This beautiful quilt is one of two made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sulphur. They have printed on them photos of interesting Sulphur buildings, groups and people.  They were assembled by Bernice Cleveland and Judy Smith, retired local teachers and members of the Historical Society.  They were then quilted by the Chickasaw Ladies quilting group.

A display reflecting more pleasant times in Sulphur shows artifacts from the Belleview Plunge, one of 3 spring-fed pool complexes once located in Sulphur.  If you didn't have a swim-suit, you rented one and left your street clothes in the metal basket.  A matching tag was pinned to your swimsuit so you could claim your possessions after swimming.

At the far end of the hall, under the stairs, is the entry to the jail cell area. (Left photo)  You can go in one of the cells, and see the cold concrete walls and metal bed shelves bolted to the wall.  Past prisoners have scratched graffiti in the walls, and it is believed that one unfortunate inmate died here.  But, don't be frightened by "Sleeping Beauty", she's only a mannequin!
